Ticketing & Entertainment Solutions

From Concert Halls to Gaming Platforms

The entertainment industry demands robust, scalable technology that can handle millions of transactions while delivering engaging user experiences. At HSEC, we’ve built systems processing 20 million event tickets annually and pioneered game development for emerging platforms like OUYA.

Enterprise Ticketing at Scale

Processing 20 Million Tickets Annually

One of our flagship achievements is the development of an internationally-used ticketing system handling a sales volume of 20 million event tickets per year. This enterprise-grade platform served venues worldwide, from intimate theaters to major concert stadiums.

Technical Highlights

Core Modules Developed:

  • Finance Integration - Complete accounting and revenue management with SAP integration
  • Callcenter Operations - Real-time ticket availability, reservation, and customer service
  • Box Office - Point-of-sale systems for venue walk-up sales
  • Auditorium Planning - 2D CAD component for venue layout management

Key Innovation: Interactive Venue Layouts

We led a specialized task force implementing a 2D CAD component enabling:

  • Visual auditorium layout design and editing
  • Seat-by-seat inventory management
  • Interactive seat selection for customers
  • Dynamic pricing zones based on venue geometry

The system leveraged Java2D and custom Swing components to deliver a responsive, desktop-grade user experience for venue managers while providing web-based seat selection for customers.

Architecture for Scale

To handle the massive transaction volume, we designed a distributed architecture:

Technology Stack:

  • Application Server: BEA WebLogic (multi-version support) and JBoss
  • Database: Oracle 9i with optimized query patterns
  • Client Technologies: Java WebStart for rich clients, Servlet/JSP for web interface
  • Security: SSL encryption, VPN for distributed box offices
  • Integration: Custom framework connecting Swing/HTML clients to EJB server components

Project Scale:

  • Team size: 15 developers
  • Codebase: Approximately 1 million lines of code
  • Methodology: Rational Unified Process (RUP) with UML modeling
  • Design approach: Enterprise patterns, OOA/OOD

SAP Integration Framework

We designed and implemented a comprehensive framework for integrating the ticketing system with SAP, ensuring:

  • Real-time financial reconciliation
  • Automated revenue posting
  • Inventory synchronization
  • Customer data management

This integration was critical for large entertainment organizations requiring enterprise-grade accounting and reporting.

Game Development for Emerging Platforms

SXP for OUYA: Pioneering Android Gaming

In 2013, HSEC ventured into the emerging OUYA platform with SXP (Space eXPerience) - a showcase study on user engagement and game mechanics.

What Was OUYA?

OUYA was an Android-based gaming console that democratized game development by allowing indie developers to publish directly to a TV-based gaming platform. HSEC recognized the platform’s potential early and developed SXP as both a commercial game and a research project.

SXP: Space Adventure Gameplay

Game Concept:

  • Space-themed adventure with multiple missions
  • “Space Taxi” mission became a player favorite
  • Physics-based navigation and obstacle avoidance
  • Progressive difficulty scaling

Technology Stack:

  • Game Engine: Unity3D with C# scripting
  • Platform: OUYA (Android-based)
  • 3D Modeling: Blender and Wings3D for asset creation
  • 2D Graphics: GIMP for textures and UI elements
  • Development: Unity3D IDE with Java/Android integration
  • Deployment: Android ADF (Application Development Framework)

Project Leadership

Helmut Hauschild served as Project Lead, responsible for:

  • IT concept and architecture
  • Core implementation in C# and Mono
  • Build management and CI/CD pipeline
  • OUYA approval process navigation
  • Publication to OUYA Store

User Engagement Study

Beyond commercial release, SXP served as a HSEC showcase study on user engagement, examining:

  • Player retention mechanics in free-to-play models
  • Difficulty curve optimization through analytics
  • First-time user experience (FTUE) effectiveness
  • Cross-platform controller input handling

The preview version was made available for free in the OUYA store, allowing us to gather real-world usage data and player feedback.

Public Reception

SXP successfully passed the OUYA approval process in June 2013, becoming one of the early titles available on the platform. The “Space Taxi” mission gameplay video garnered positive attention from the indie gaming community.
